WorkSpace delivered essential upgrade works at the University of Dundee Medical School within Ninewells Hospital, replacing condemned wooden walkways in the attic space above the Gannochy Lecture Theatre. The deteriorated walkways had restricted safe access to ceiling-mounted light fittings and electrical services, making vital maintenance impossible.
To restore and improve safe access, our team carried out a full package of works, including the removal and replacement of the walkways, installation of new handrails and ladders, and upgrades to lighting and data services. A large internal birdcage scaffold was constructed within the lecture theatre to provide access, alongside external scaffolding for roof entry. All theatre furniture and fittings were carefully protected and relocated to prevent disruption.
Operating within a live hospital and university campus required precise planning and close coordination to maintain safety and ensure day-to-day operations continued uninterrupted.
The project was delivered on time and within budget, achieving significant client savings through value engineering - reducing scaffolding requirements, reusing structural elements, and reallocating work efficiently. The completed works restored safe access to the attic, enhanced the lecture theatre’s lighting and finishes, and were carried out safely within a live environment.
Our approach showcased innovation, collaboration, and community engagement. By using a birdcage scaffolding method, we avoided full ceiling removal, minimising disruption in a sensitive hospital environment. Collaboration with the University estates team, consultants, and contractors ensured smooth delivery from start to finish.
In addition to project delivery, WorkSpace supported the local community by participating in a charity golf day for The Archie Foundation and by donating surplus canteen goods to NHS Tayside’s Volunteering Service, directly benefiting hospital staff and volunteers.
““This was a challenging project, and the professionalism shown by yourselves throughout the project has been first class. You have achieved a very unusual result in receiving no complaints from our NHS landlords, so congratulations on that. The end result makes such a difference to the area, and folk can now enter the area without the risk of cataclysmic injury.””
