WorkSpace has successfully delivered the full relocation, reconfiguration and refurbishment of Runcorn Job Centre Plus (JCP), converting two vacant retail units at Trident Retail Park into a modern, open-plan employment support centre.
The single-stage design and build project created a fully fitted-out facility accommodating 34 staff members and workstations, alongside secure back-office functions. The transformation involved significant construction works not typically associated with fit-out projects, including the installation of new staircases, a lift, facade improvements, a plant room, and structural interventions.
A newly constructed mezzanine level provided essential back-of-house offices, meeting rooms, breakout areas, and welfare facilities, which can be accessed by installed steel staircases and a platform lift, ensuring accessibility throughout the building.
The scope covered a full end-to-end package, from design development through to completion. Externally, new glass facades, insulated panels, and shopfronts with accessible ramps were installed to enhance the building’s presence. Internally, partition walls, raised floors, ceilings, cabinetry, bathrooms, and acoustic treatments created a high-quality working environment for staff and visitors.
Mechanical and electrical upgrades included new electrical panels, heat pumps, ductwork, and a full lighting installation. Due to the site’s location within a busy retail park, careful planning and close collaboration with retail park management, businesses, and client representatives ensured minimal disruption and continuity of DWP’s operations on level 1 until relocation once the project was handed over.
The project was delivered on time and within budget, achieving more than £385k in savings through value engineering in areas such as curtain walling, door automation, lighting, ceilings, flooring, and finishes. Notably, this was the client’s first fit-out to feature an open ceiling design.
Accessibility and inclusion were central to the scheme, with design standards prioritised through the installation of a new ramp and platform lift, ensuring the centre is welcoming and accessible for all.
